A sharply rendered late Republican denarius with evocative mythological imagery

Struck circa 85 BC for the moneyer Mn. Fonteius C.f., this silver denarius belongs to the turbulent final century of the Roman Republic, when aristocratic families used coinage to proclaim ancestry, religious devotion, and political identity. The Fonteii were an established plebeian gens, and on this issue Mn. Fonteius chose a distinctly learned and archaizing design, pairing a noble youthful head with a highly unusual reverse of a winged figure riding a goat. Such types reflect the increasingly sophisticated visual language of Republican coinage, in which moneyers advertised family traditions and divine associations to a Roman audience deeply attuned to religious symbolism.

The goat is a key attribute in the identification of Vejovis, while the winged rider introduces an added divine or protective dimension.
