Description / Mn.Fonteius C.f., c.85 BC ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius NGC XF40
A sharply rendered late Republican denarius with evocative mythological imagery
Struck circa 85 BC for the moneyer Mn. Fonteius C.f., this silver denarius belongs to the turbulent final century of the Roman Republic, when aristocratic families used coinage to proclaim ancestry, religious devotion, and political identity. The Fonteii were an established plebeian gens, and on this issue Mn. Fonteius chose a distinctly learned and archaizing design, pairing a noble youthful head with a highly unusual reverse of a winged figure riding a goat. Such types reflect the increasingly sophisticated visual language of Republican coinage, in which moneyers advertised family traditions and divine associations to a Roman audience deeply attuned to religious symbolism.
The obverse presents a laureate head right, identified by NGC as Apollo or Vejovis, rendered in refined late Republican style with crisply engraved hair and an expressive profile. The surrounding inscription reads M-FONTEI, expanded as Marcus Fonteius, while C F at the lower right abbreviates C(aii) filius, “son of Gaius.” In Latin, the legends therefore read M-FONTEI / C-F, meaning “of Marcus Fonteius, son of Gaius.” The youthful deity may be read as Apollo, god of order, music, and prophecy, or as Vejovis, an archaic Roman divinity sometimes depicted in youthful form and associated in certain traditions with a goat. The reverse shows Cupid, or a genius, riding right upon a goat beneath a laurel wreath, a composition of remarkable charm and symbolic resonance. The goat is a key attribute in the identification of Vejovis, while the winged rider introduces an added divine or protective dimension. The laurel wreath above reinforces associations of victory, sanctity, and Apollonian favor. Together, the types suggest a carefully constructed religious message, likely intended to evoke the moneyer’s familial cultic connections and piety.
Certified NGC XF, with Strike 4/5 and Surface 4/5, this is an especially attractive example for the type. The strike is bold on both sides, preserving the important central devices with pleasing clarity, while the surfaces are notably wholesome and display nice original cabinet toning in silver-gray shades with subtle warm highlights. The portrait retains strong detail through the hair, wreath, and facial features, and the reverse—often found less distinct on this issue—shows the winged rider and goat with commendable definition. Overall style is fine, and the coin offers the balanced visual appeal advanced collectors seek in Republican silver.
Republican denarii of Mn. Fonteius are avidly collected for their unusual iconography, their connection to the complex religious world of mid-first-century Rome, and their place within the rich series of moneyer issues that document family ambition before the fall of the Republic. This type is particularly desirable for its enigmatic Apollo-or-Vejovis obverse and memorable reverse motif, a design far more distinctive than the standard helmeted heads and chariot scenes of the broader series. Its mythological interest, historical context, and strong certified quality make it a compelling acquisition for collectors of Roman Republican coinage, mythological types, and ancient silver of artistic merit.
An appealing and thoughtfully chosen Republican issue, this denarius offers both historical depth and enduring visual character in a well-preserved certified example.
